Working with the City of Lewiston and Amos Development, we have repaired a portion of the pipe that restores water service to four of the seven buildings identified as offline today (Hedge, Dana, Hathorn, and Parker). Subsequent to the morning message we learned Pettigrew was not impacted, and has water service. Lane and Pettengill remain without water service. Four key points:
(a) Additional work and repairs will be needed to address the pipe failure from Pettengill, and we can expect considerable continued work on Alumni Walk in the coming days to both excavate around the existing pipe infrastructure, fix the pipe to Pettingill (which feeds Lane) and repair Alumni Walk. Thank you in advance for your patience.
(b) We will be working with Accessible Education and Student Support to ensure continued access to Dana if the Alumni Walk accessible entrance is blocked by the repair work. If you need accessible entry to Dana, please contact Joel Copperthite, Director of Accessible Education, or Gwen Lexow, Associate Vice President for Title IX and Civil Rights.
(c) For those in Hedge, Dana, Hathorn, and Parker, it will not be uncommon to see discoloration in the water, hear gurgling sounds, hear air pass through fixtures, or have fixtures that are motion operated run continuously now that service has been restored. By running the water for several minutes the lines will be purged and returned to normal conditions. Facility Services crews will be circulating through campus to assist in purging lines and addressing any issues as a result of the outage. Please contact Facility Services Work Control at 207-786-6449 via text or phone call, or via email at facility-work-request@groups.bates.edu with any specific questions or concerns.
(d) For those in Pettengill and Lane, while the water is out in these buildings please refrain from utilizing the restroom facilities.
Most of all, I’m sorry that we have this disturbance on a beautiful Convocation Tuesday, and I apologize for any inconvenience as classes start tomorrow.
Thank you,
Geoffrey Swift
